The way a Direct Copper Cylinder operates is by the use of an immersion heater (or heaters) that sit directly within it heating up the water. The advantage of a direct cylinder is that no boiler is required to heat the water within, but unlike an indirect cylinder the heat-up and recovery times take a bit longer.
