What is a water softener?

A water softener works by removing magnesium and calcium within your water supply, through a process of ion exchange turning it from hard water to softened water. Soft water is better for your system as it does not cause damage to your pipes or cause limescale build-ups in your appliances.

Hard water can wreak havoc with hot water appliances, the higher the temperature of the water the more calcium and magnesium will solidify and harden into solid deposits inside your hot water appliances.

If you’re unsure if a water softener would be beneficial to your heating system, we recommend considering the following benefits:

  • Less damage to pipes and heating appliances caused by limescale build-up.
  • Prolongs the lifespan of appliances by reducing limescale and scum build-up.
  • Soft water penetrates and dissolves better with soap, meaning more suds and deeper lather for your body, clothes, and dishes.
  • Softer skin and hair due to fewer minerals within the water.

Water softeners can be quite expensive but given the advantages above and the impact they can have on preventable repairs, they are a worthwhile investment if you live in a hard water area.

At Direct Heating Supplies, we sell an extensive range of water softeners from leading manufacturers including Advanced Hydro, Monarch Water and BWT. We have water softeners in a range of capacities so regardless of your property’s size and water requirements you are bound to find the perfect water softener for your home.

If you are worried about the cost of a water softener and are looking for an alternative option, we also sell scale inhibitors, commonly known as water conditioners. A water conditioner will reduce scale build up in your pipes, but it is not a complete solution, as it is unable to remove the minerals that make the water hard.
